<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy would I come to a place that hates me for what I am?\u201d<\/em> captures the lived reality of many Black and Muslim women navigating the intersectionality of racism, migration, mobility, and belonging in new global times. <\/summary>\n

Their encounters with states, borders, and everyday institutional publics are shaped by racialised suspicion, Islamophobic surveillance, and gendered moral regulation. In such contexts, trust<\/em> is not a neutral expectation but a colonial demand in which institutions insist on being trusted while offering little structural trustworthiness in return. Mistrust<\/em> emerges from the opacity of migration systems, \u2018safeguarding\u2019 regimes, and counter\u2011terrorism policies that cast Black and Muslim women and girls as either risky or deficient. Distrust<\/em>, however, is their rational, historically grounded response to the violence of imperialism, the legacies of enslavement, genocide and Islamophobia. Yet, as my research shows, Black and Muslim women \u2018still rise\u2019 to form and cultivate alternative infrastructures of trust and citizenship among themselves. Through their decolonial feminist world\u2011making – grounded in diasporic solidarities and communities of hope, love, and care – they imagine familial futures beyond the hate, hostility and violence that defines and fuels our racialised world order.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Biography:<\/strong> Heidi Safia Mirza is Emeritus Professor of Equality Studies in Education at UCL Institute of Education. She is internationally known for her pioneering intersectional research on Race, gender, and identity in education and championing equality and rights for Black, Asian and Muslim Women and young people through educational reform. A daughter of the Windrush generation from Trinidad, Heidi has been honoured as one of the first and rare 35 \u2018Phenomenal Black Women Professors\u2019 in Britain<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is author of several best-selling books including, Race Gender and Educational Desire, Black British Feminism<\/em> ja Young Female and Black<\/em>, which was voted in the top 40 most influential educational studies in Britain. A leading voice in the global debate on decolonisation she co-edited the flagship book, \u2018Dismantling Race in Higher Education: Racism, whiteness and decolonising the academy\u2019<\/em>. She recently led the influential Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) Deaton Review of \u2018Race and ethnic inequalities\u2019 which includes the impact of COVID-19 on Black and minority ethnic communities. Entrepreneur and Professor of Practice Shadia Rask<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ageing societies such as Finland seek to attract foreign workers to offset the shrinking working-age population and strengthen the economic sustainability of the welfare state. At the same time, receiving countries struggle with uneven integration outcomes, growing opposition to immigration and increasing cultural diversity. A central paradox emerges: immigration is needed, but immigrants are not wanted.<\/summary>\n

My keynote draws together research findings and lived experiences to explore how deservingness and trust are negotiated. Through interviews with women from immigrant backgrounds, I illustrate the tensions and pressure generated by xenophobia and increasingly restrictive immigration policies. For example, Roya Ranjbar, Head of Operations at AIDA, reflected in 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just about waiting a few more years. It\u2019s the prolonged uncertainty and nightmares. … When you are making decisions about citizenship and residency requirements, it\u2019s not just some written rule. It\u2019s about the best years of someone\u2019s life. People who have wanted to come to Finland, to be part of this country, to give to this country.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These experiences reveal how the boundaries of belonging and solidarity are continuously imagined, contested, and renegotiated. But what is sustainable, and for whom?<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Biography: <\/strong>Shadia Rask is an entrepreneur and Professor of Practice at Hanken School of Economics. Her core expertise is on social sustainability, particularly questions related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and immigration. Shadia holds a PhD in public health, and her research has focused on inequities in the context of immigration. Before entrepreneurship, Shadia worked in research and development for 13 years at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadia is a board member of UN Women Finland and Startup Refugees. She is also a columnist for the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE. Shadia is a nationally acclaimed speaker and has been awarded the ETMU Award and the State Award for Public Information for her constructive and research-based contributions to public discourse on racism and inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panel discussion \u2013 Trust, migration and integration in Finland <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on the newly published edited volume Trust Dilemmas \u2013 Perspectives on Trust, Migration and Integration<\/em>, edited by Magdalena Kmak, Eveliina Lyytinen and Liselott Sundb\u00e4ck, this panel explores the role of trust in migration and integration. The discussion addresses whether trust is necessary for inclusion and two-way integration, what alternative strategies emerge when trust is not possible or safe, and how society can foster trusting relationships while acknowledging the risks and vulnerabilities involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patricia Hynes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Patricia Hynes is a Professor of Social Justice in the Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice, Sheffield Hallam University. She conducts applied research on forced migration in all its forms, particularly in relation to refugees, asylum seekers and people affected by human trafficking. A key theme running through her published works relates to the issue of trust and\/or mistrust in humanitarian contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outi K\u00e4h\u00e4ri<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Outi K\u00e4h\u00e4ri is a senior researcher in the department of social sciences at the University of Eastern Finland. She holds a doctoral degree in sociology (University of Turku) and the title of associate professor (docent) in minority history (University of Oulu). She has explored various trust-related phenomena in everyday and institutional encounters in the context of migration and integration. Recently, her research has focused on minority history of Ingrian Finns and memories among displaced families in the Baltic and Nordic states. Currently, she works in the project Intergenerational Non-Belonging: Minority Identities and Mental Health in Swedish-Finnish Families<\/em> in which researchers explore how ethnic minority identities are transmitted across generations.

Areen Nasser<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Areen Nassar is a postdoctoral researcher at the Kokkola Consortium Chydenius, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland. He holds a PhD in Social Sciences with a specialization in Social Work. His research focuses on capabilities, well-being, and research ethics in contexts of forced migration. He is particularly interested in the role of trust in research encounters, including how trust is understood, developed, and sustained in relationships between researchers and participants. His research also engages with studies of victims of human trafficking, particularly in the context of young people who run away from institutional care.

Liisi Rwambiwa<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Liisi Rwambiwa is an expert in institutional trust and social cohesion, with over 15 years of experience in social and health services and the third sector. She currently serves as Head of the Social Cohesion Unit at the Finnish Refugee Council, focusing on strengthening trust between communities and institutions. Previously, she has worked in trust-building, preventing polarisation, and improving the accessibility of public services for multilingual communities. She has also served as Executive Director of Hyv\u00e4 Koti ry, an NGO supporting people experiencing mental health challenges and trauma. Rwambiwa has worked in both Finland and the United Kingdom and is currently completing a Master\u2019s degree in Future Leadership in Social and Health Care. Her current research examines fear of authorities and institutional trust among immigrant and multilingual families with children.

Her research focuses broadly on the welfare state and migration, with a particular emphasis on institutional encounters and trust. Currently, she works on topics related to migrant mothers and trust, linguistic vulnerabilities in child welfare, and bureaucratic tensions surrounding the choice of Swedish as a language of integration.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
