Bio

Joa Hiitola (PhD, Gender Studies) is a professor of Social Work. Their research concerns family relations, migration policy and questions of power-knowledge in different areas of expertise and evaluative practices. Hiitola is the PI of a project on Transnational Child Protection, funded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as well as a project on commercial DNA testing and family relations, funded by the Northern Ostrobothnian Cultural Foundation and the Eudaimonia Institute at the University of Oulu. In Mobile Futures Hiitola has studied refugees’ life trajectories and place-bound belonging.
