Julkisessa keskustelussa työperäisen maahanmuuton tarve nostetaan esille yhtenä ratkaisuna väestönrakenteen muutosten tuomiin haasteisiin. Suomalainen yhteiskunta on kuitenkin jo nyt moninainen. Vaikka työelämässä työskentelee eritaustaisia työntekijöitä, tutkimuksessa on todettu, että rakenteellinen syrjintä ja rasismi vaikuttavat maahanmuuttaja- tai vähemmistötaustaisten ihmisten mahdollisuuksiin työmarkkinoilla.
